Cortland County Sheriff's Office warns of Verizon phone call scams

CORTLAND, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office is warning locals of an ongoing phone scam where scammers pretend to be from Verizon and attempt to get money from you. 

The scammers will say that they are an employee with Verizon and that the individual’s Windows computer program may be corrupted. They claim they can fix the problems with a credit card number. 

The victims are instructed to stay on the phone for two hours while the computer gets “fixed,” all the while, the scammers are making purchases on the individual’s credit card. 

If you believe you have become the victim of identity theft, contact your local police agency to file a report.
