SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - Veteran Syracuse Democrat Joe Nicoletti has won the party’s nomination for mayor.
Nicoletti defeated Andrew Maxwell in the second round of voting for the party’s nomination.
Nicoletti may still face a primary for the a spot on the November ballot. In addition to Nicoletti and Maxwell, other Democrats who were seeking the party’s nomination were Raymond Blackwell, Alfonso Davis, Chris Fowler, Marty Masterpole and Juanita Perez Williams.
Mayor Stephanie Miner cannot seek re-election because of term limits.
The race for mayor of Syracuse is likely to be a four-way contest. The Republican party has endorsed Laura Levine, Ben Walsh has been endorsed by the Reform Party and the Green Party candidate is Howie Hawkins.
Democratic Candidate Alfonso Davis released the following statement after the party made its designation:
"I would like to congratulate Mr. Nicoletti on receiving the democratic designation from the party. While the Democratic Committee votes to provide democratic representation for the party, it is but a microcosm of the great people of this city. The people should ultimately decide who they want to represent the democratic party in November. With that being said I look forward to a well spirited primary in September."
