Departments battle house fire in DeWitt

TOWN OF DEWITT (WSYR-TV) - Multiple fire departments and emergency crews responded to a reported house fire on Oak Hollow Road in the Town of DeWitt Saturday night.

911 dispatchers tell us the call came in shortly after 10 p.m.

The Onondaga County Sheriff's Office tells us no one was home when the fire started.

"We had some frozen hydrants to deal with so it was a little bit of a delay getting water. We had to go to a second hydrant," said Chief Jason Green, of the DeWitt Fire Department.

Chief Green says the fire was wide-spread upon arrival.

"The fire had quite a bit of a head start on us because no one was home and it was already through the roof and a partial collapse before we arrived on the scene," Green said.

Firefighters from East Syracuse, Manlius and Fayetteville responded. Because of the cold temperatures, Chief Green says firefighters were rotated on and off the operation.

Overnight, 911 calls were made to report the fire had rekindled at the home a few more times after crews cleared the scene.

Chief Green says the investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
