DWI checkpoints spark two police chases in Auburn

AUBURN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Auburn Police issued multiple tickets to two drivers attempting to leave DWI checkpoints and ensuing chases from the area around 10 o'clock last night, according to Cayuga County Dispatchers.

One pursuit started from a checkpoint on Arterial East near North Fulton Street in Auburn. The chase ended with a crash on Seymour Street near North Fulton Street.

A dispatcher tells NewsChannel 9, the driver of the car is being treated at Upstate University Hospital with "serious head injuries."

The driver also hit another car with a child passenger in it, but the dispatcher tells us those injuries are not serous.

The dispatcher tells us the second car chase happened around the same time when a car took off from the checkpoint and crashed into the Lift It Fitness & Training gym on Clark Street.

The driver didn't have a license, the dispatcher says this is why it is believed the driver took off.

The driver has been issued 25 tickets, according to the dispatcher, who also says there were no major injuries in this incident.
