Eating at the fair with dietary restrictions

All it takes is communication

GEDDES, NY (WSYR-TV) - Many fairgoers trek around the fairgrounds with limited food options, due to dietary restrictions or allergies, but that doesn't mean they have to miss out on the fun.

"There are tons of different foods here, so just make sure you're asking the right questions," said Kelly Springer, Dietitian.

Springer says no matter how much research you do online, it's important to ask in person.

"When you go to the fair, make sure you go to the vendor where you're about to eat 'is there any gluten?' 'Is there any lactose in this product?'" said Springer.

It seems simple enough, but sometimes your favorites can be switched without you knowing.

"Most of the people with allergies are aware of the foods that could cause them to be sick, but you want to make sure that cross-contamination or also if they're switching products around, you may not be aware, so just ask before you eat," said Springer.

For some, it may be as simple as personalizing your food. As an example, if you order a gyro and you have a gluten allergy, order it without the pita.

"You could do it without the cheese, so you know there's little things you can do to customize what you're going to have to eat," said Springer.

But if you're ever unsure, don't eat it! It's better to be safe than sorry!
