ELMS students looking to make a difference celebrate Day of Peace

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Some of Syracuse’s youngest residents have some big plans to make their community a better, safer place.

The Expeditionary Learning Middle School (ELMS) celebrated their third annual Day of Peace celebration on Thursday.

Students have spent much of their school year studying and dissecting a difficult subject— the epidemic of violence.

They’ve been exploring ways to end violence, through words and actions.

The students also made documentary films about local abolitionists, physical education, videos about change in making the community healthier— everything centered around the quest for change.

Day of Peace was also a day to have fun, and enjoy just being a kid.

We're trying to create change since there's a lot of violence going on— a lot of guns and murders. So we are just trying to change. We're just kids, but we can do a lot of things,” said 7th grader Chadani Timina.

They want other kids, and adults to take notice.
