Explosive training for first responders

Soldiers and officers work together to find solutions

ORISKANY,, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - It's meant to feel just like the real thing. The Raven's Challenge. A four-day exercise for first responder to learn about explosives.

Soldiers from across the country of all ranks, all ages, and all skill levels meet at the New York State Preparedness Training Center in Oriskany, NY.

New York state is one of four states to host The Raven's Challenge.

The exercises range from dealing with bomb threats to hostage situations, forcing officers and soldiers had to work together to come up with solutions.

One scenario had soldiers and officers working with robots to keep a bomb from detonating.

But the most important lessons these soldiers and officers can learn come from each other.

"The whole purpose of this exercise is for these guys to blend their skills," said Stephen Shelly, an explosives enforcement officer.

Blending their skills so, should an emergency happen, they'll be ready.
