F-M School board to begin planning buildings renovations

Board to create community task force; Wellwood Middle School first on the list

FAYETTEVILLE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The Fayetteville-Manlius School District is set to move forward tonight with plans on how it will go about addressing the many facilities needs in the district.

One part of the strategy will be the formation of a diverse community task force to begin work later this month.

A 2015 state-mandated five-year buildings review and subsequent consultants study identified just under $100 million worth of work to four of F-M six school buildings.

In December, the board ruled out, with significant public input, building a new school and reconfiguring others in order to keep the current community schools configuration.

F-M Schools Superintendent Dr. Craig Tice says, "We identified the top 3 priorities as Wellwood Middle School, followed by the High School and then Enders Road Elementary as third, fourth place is Eagle Hill Middle School."

Wellwood Middle School is in need of almost everything from replacing the entire heating plant to replacing the roof, windows and doors just to name a few.

Dr. Tice tells NewsChannel 9, "Every option is on the table and it could be from minor renovations to a complete gut of the building so we're looking at any and all possibilities."

Depending on what the task force and ultimately the board decide to do with any of the schools it knows swing space for the students is going to have to be part of the consideration.

Dr. Tice says, "There are a lot of moving parts and pieces and some of it is actual physical location.  It could mean scheduling in terms of if we bring a grade level from one building to another building it may impact the master schedule in terms of course options so we're going to take a look at everything."

The goal is to have the task force present its report to the board this Spring.

Dr. Tice says the earliest a public vote will happen will be June, but expects it more likely in the Fall.

Monday's meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Enders Road Elementary School gymnasium.
