Police: Father of 2-year-old boy shot in Rochester arrested

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Rochester Police Chief Ciminelli says that, after a search warrant was executed at the home on Walnut Street Friday, police arrested the father of the 2-year-old who was shot inside the home.

Police say 2-year-old Zayden Phillips is currently listed in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Charles Timothy Phillips, 36, has been arrested and charged with Assault in the First Degree and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree.

Police say Phillips was arrested after police located a handgun inside the home on Walnut Street.

Chief Ciminelli says police do not believe there is a second suspect.

WROC-TV spoke to Phyllis Green, an aunt of the child who was injured.

She said her 2-year-old nephew was shot. The boy's mother was on a field trip with one of the boy’s siblings, and the boy was home with his father at the time of the incident, according to Green.

The investigation is ongoing. Head over to RochesterFirst.com for updates.
