SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - Changes in the coaching lineup for the Syracuse University Men’s Basketball program have given Orange Nation a few things to digest.
Some fans say they were not surprised to learn that Head Coach Jim Boeheim agreed to extend this contract. In fact, they say they simply cannot imagine SU Basketball without him.
“He’s a fixture in the city so you know it’s good for recruiting,” said SU Hoops fan Victor Cosme. “People come here just to play for him and his defense so I think it’s a good thing.”
Cosme says it’s a good thing as Boeheim’s been asked countless times about when he will retire.
Less than a year ago, in an NCAA Tournament news conference, Boeheim had this to say about the topic: “Al Maguire once told me, one day I was driving to work and I come down the ramp and I turn right and the day I turn left, I’m not going to work anymore and he turned left one day and that was it. So, I’m going to turn left one day too.”
However, Boeheim made it clear in today’s news conference that he’s not “turning left” just yet and that, “he’s never been more excited about a season,” when talking about next year.
With the departure of former SU assistant coach Mike Hopkins already on the table, Boeheim says his decision to extend his contract was an easy one.
“My immediate thought is, I want to coach,” Boeheim said. “Immediately, I want to continue to coach. I want to keep out staff intact. I want to keep our recruits here.”
Fans say Orange Nation should be confident about securing recruits with Boeheim on the court, and they say, his age is not a factor.
“As long as he feels like it and he feels well, I agree, I think he should do it,” SU Hoops fan Stephen Vanalstine.”
Cosme says the hall-of-famer’s experience speaks for itself.
“The longer he’s here the better, the more experience he’s getting,” Cosme said. “There’s lot of older coaches and I think younger guys respect that too.”
