SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - Syracuse Police tell NewsChannel 9 that crashes on Interstate 690 have more than tripled since construction began near the Teall Avenue exit.
From May15th, the week when construction started, to June 15th, there have been 36 crashes. There were 10 crashes in the same time period last year.
While the New York State Department of Transportation can't confirm the increase is directly related to construction, they advise drivers to pay attention when moving through the congested area.
Syracuse Police say drivers can do their part to be safe.
Sgt. David Sackett says, "We're not going to say that construction is why accidents are happening. The people that are diving is what's happening. They've got to slow up. They've got to know construction is going on."
The two-year project on I-690 will result in new ramps from Teall Avenue and new bridges over Teall Avenue and Beech Street.
