Food trucks will be tough to find in Downtown Syracuse this summer

(SYRACUSE) WSYR-TV - One thing will be missing from downtown Syracuse this summer -- food trucks.

This year, a lot of the business owners decided to pass on what they call a high-priced license to park in the city.

“It’s not worth $1,500 to be in one spot that may, or may not, work,” said Nick Sanford, a member of the Syracuse Food Truck Association and owner of Toss n Fire Pizza food truck. “You pay and find out.”

The $1,500 price for food trucks in the City of Syracuse was set by an ordinance in 1991.

Another issue, Sanford says, is the license locks food trucks into one specific spot and says it’s not uncommon for business owners to have “trouble parking” or encounter other people “parking in spaces designated for food trucks.”

A few drivers tell NewsChannel 9 they aren’t happy with the spots being designated and wish the city would create more locations that have better pedestrian traffic.

The approved list of sites for food trucks are:

- South side of 400 block of East Fayette Street between South State Street and South Townsend Street (adjacent to Fireman's Park).

- North side of 100 block of West Onondaga Street between South Salina Street and South Clinton Street.

- East side of 700 block of South Warren Street within one hundred fifty (150) feet from the southeast corner of East Adams Street.

- Northeast corner of 400 block of North State Street and 300 block of Hickory Street.

- South curb of West Jefferson Street (in front of MOST and across from Sibley's Garage).

- South side of 300 block of West Washington Street (mid-point of street).

- East side of 700 block of South State Street (between the Everson Museum and Public Safety Building)

- West Curb Line of Walnut Avenue between Washington Street and Water Street

So where will most of the food trucks be this summer? At designated food truck rodeos Monday through Friday throughout Onondaga County.
