St. Petersburg, Fla. (WSYR-TV) - Before Hurricane Irma was downgraded to a Category 1 storm -- more than five million people were ordered to evacuate Florida.
Living in an evacuation zone in St. Petersburg -- former Central New York couple Becky and Craig Laughlin Jr., chose to stay in their community.
As of Monday morning, Craig says the power is on and there is some noticeable damage near the office building they're staying in -- a location within the non-evacuation zone. He says some trees were down and the wind was still strong.
When evacuations were ordered last week, Craig says finding fuel was a challenge as gas stations across the Florida Gulf Coast were running dry due to a high demand.
Plus, Becky was working through last Friday at a medical office in St. Petersburg that was continuing to see patients as usual.
The couple boarded up their home before heading for their safe location. They have not yet returned to their home to survey damage. Before, leaving their home, Craig says there was already some noticeable damage to their fence.
