How Central New York teachers can save money next tax season

NORTH SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - Senator Charles Schumer is taking a short break from his work in Washington to remind Central New York's teachers of a tax break.

It's a tax deduction for teachers who spend their own personal money on their classroom or school supplies, up to $250.

Kindergarten teacher Mary Stimson, at Bear Road Elementary School in North Syracuse, says in her six years of teaching, she's spent $7,000.

Stimson's fiance, an accountant, makes sure she files the deduction every year.

According to statistics from Senator Schumer's office, just about 52% of teachers took advantage of the credit in previous years.

It's as simple as adding classroom expenses to an itemized tax form.
