8-year old meets her kidney donor before Christmas

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - When eight year old Cecelia Brown was diagnosed with stage three renal failure, her parents knew she would eventually need to find a kidney donor, but they didn't know they would find one so quickly.

"When we came in to talk about it, we didn't expect them to have one so soon," Julia Waterman, Brown's mother said. "It's a holiday miracle."

That's where Kelli Maher comes in. After seeing a Facebook post from a friend asking for a kidney donation, Maher decided to undergo testing necessary for a transplant. Her friend eventually found another match, but Maher kept her name on a waiting list anyway.

Maher ended up being the match Brown needed, and three months ago doctors at Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital performed the surgery.

"[This is] the true meaning of Christmas right here," Maher said in tears.

The two have quickly formed a special relationship and hope to continue following each other's lives.

"I can't wait to see her reach milestones," Maher said "It's a bond that will never be broken."
