Illegal school bus passes exceed 40,000

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The New York Association for Pupil Transportation has released a survey that measured the incidence of motorists illegally passing stopped school buses.

Thirty-five New York State school districts participated in the survey that was taken on December 15, 2016.

In just one day, 765 school bus drivers reported they were passed a total of 678 times, including 101 passes on the right side of the school bus.

When calculated with 50,000 school buses,  44,314 passes a day could occur. Using the same factors, 6,601 motorists would have passes school buses on the right side of the bus that day, which is the passenger side.

In October 40,654 motorists passed stopped school buses.

October and November of 2016 were the first times that this survey has topped the 40,000 mark.
