Jim Boeheim on John Gillon: 'He is the only reason we have won 8 games in a really difficult league'

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The keys to success really haven't changed all that much for Syracuse this season.

Good defense and quality guard play—if the Orange gets both of those things, this team can beat anybody in the country.

On the flip side, when those things aren't up to par, the end result generally isn't either.

Take SU’s three-game losing streak for instance: during this stretch, John Gillon has a total of 15 assists and 13 turnovers. This, from a player who's average assist to turnover ratio on the season is 3-to-1.

So Gillon needs to be better than that on Wednesday if SU hopes to beat Duke.

If you think Jim Boeheim is even entertaining the possibility of a lineup change— even if Gillon struggles— think again.

"The only games we have won, John Gillon has won for us. When he is having an off game, I am not going to say, ok you are done. He is what got us here. He is the only reason we have won 8 games in a really difficult league. We need him to play better, but he is the guy. It is not like we have another guy that is better.  He is the best point guard we have by about ten miles,” said head coach Jim Boeheim.

Duke has opened as a 3-point favorite. The line has since gone up to 4.5.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. on Wednesday inside the Dome.
