KeyBank offers 'Cyber Monday' safety advice

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - It was a record-breaking Cyber Money, both in terms of the billions spent and how consumers are skipping the mall for online shopping in masses.

KeyBank focuses on "financial well-being" at its branches in Central New York. A KeyBank manager shared some offers customers some advice for the holiday shopping season.

1. Where You Shop
Private WiFi networks at home are safer than public networks at restaurants, cafes and airports.

KeyBank's Area Retail Leader, Michael Madigan, says it's "because there's less security. Anybody can be on there, so hackers with different types of software see the information you're putting online."

2. Look for "S" after "HTTP" in URLs
"Https://" means its a secure site.

3. Rethink Passwords
If it's easy for you to remember, it's easy to hack. Use a combination of upper and lower case letters and symbols.

4. Don't Send Sensitive Information Via Email
Most companies won't ask for sensitive information to be typed in an email. Always submit it through the brand's website.

5. Take Advantage of Alerts
Many banks and financial institutions offer apps and alerts in case private information is hacked.

6. Update Anti-Virus Software
Not only for your computer, but for your smart phone and tablet too.
