Lack of funding for Meals on Wheels could leave CNY seniors hungry

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - There's been a rise among need for Meals on Wheels deliveries in the Syracuse area over the past several years, but federal and state funding for the organization has remained the same.

That means dozens of seniors may not get the food deliveries they've requested through the service. Beginning on November 1st, the organization needed to create a waitlist of potential recipients.

"Need was outpacing the funding that was available through the state and federal government," Mason Kaufman, the executive director of Syracuse Meals on Wheels, said.

Meals on Wheels currently gives nearly a half million deliveries of food to over 1,000 seniors in the Syracuse area.

"They can't keep on letting us go hungry," Christopher Powell, who's on the waitlist for Meals on Wheels, said.

Kaufman expects about 50 people to be on the waitlist through April.
