Local diner closed for business after roof caves in

Owner vows to reopen

Lakeland, NY (WSYR-TV) -
What would've been a busy Friday night for one local diner was instead met with silence after the roof caved in.

The roof on Ernie's Lakeland Cafe collapsed Thursday afternoon while owner Ernie Tuff was taking a break across the street.

"I heard this crackling noise at the restaurant and the roof caved in and I came over, came inside and I couldn't believe what was here," said Tuff.

And as he walked inside, he says it was a mess.

"I mean everything had fallen and there was tables and chairs around," said Tuff.

So Friday, construction crews got to work.

"They've started cutting the tresses and carrying them out in small sections," said Tuff.

It's bad, but could have been much worse.

"It's sad, but the good thing is nobody was here and got hurt, because this can be replaced, life cannot," said Tuff.

Ernie says he has no idea how long it will be before his restaurant reopens; he says construction crews will be putting on a temporary roof and then insurance companies will assess the damage.

Ernie will still be running his catering company, until his restaurant is back open.
