ELMIRA, N.Y. (18 NEWS) - An early morning police chase in Elmira has ended with a man shot dead.
Detective Bureau Captain Anthony Alvernaz, of the Elmira Police Department, told WETM-TV that the chase began after a report of a home invasion robbery around 5 a.m. Thursday, where the suspect is alleged to have fired shots inside a home.
Elmira Police began searching for the suspect, 34-year-old James Davis, and located him around 9 a.m. The chase started in the City of Elmira, and ultimately ended on Latta Brook Rd., in Horseheads.
Captain Alvernaz says that after the suspect shed two tires on his car, he fired shots at law enforcement officers, who then returned fire.
Davis was hit by an Elmira Police Officer.
He was sent to the hospital in critical condition. He later succumbed to his injuries.
Davis was wanted by the New York State Department of Parole and was wanted for a previous robbery incident.
The investigation is being handled by the Chemung County Sheriff's Office.
