Marriott Syracuse Downtown named Best City Center Historic Hotel by Historic Hotels of America

The award typically goes to seasoned hotels

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - The Marriott Syracuse Downtown was named the Best City Center Historic Hotel by Historic Hotels of America (HHA) during an industry gala on Thursday.

Award recipients were selected from nominees received from historic hotels, historic preservation supporters, prior award recipients, community leaders, and leadership from HHA and Historic Hotels Worldwide (HWW).

Hotel owner Ed Riley was at the Virginia gala to accept the award.

This is the first time in the association's history that this award was given to a first-year hotel-- winners usually have been around for years.

Marriott Syracuse Downtown, originally opened as Hotel Syracuse in 1924, beat out other hotels nominated in the field that included:

  • The Willard InterContinental, Washington DC (1847) Washington, DC
  • Fairmont Hotel San Francisco (1907) San Francisco, California
  • The Lancaster Hotel (1926) Houston, Texas
  • Mayflower Park Hotel (1927) Seattle, Washington
