SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - Outgoing Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner confirms to NewsChannel 9 that she's reconsidering running for Congress in 2018.
She's already trading jabs with her possible opponent, incumbent Congressman John Katko.
“This tax plan is proving to be such a disaster that many people nationwide are reconsidering their decisions on House races. The Trump-Ryan-Katko failure to govern dooms many Syracusans and it will doom Rep. Katko’s chances for re-election.
“As I said at the time, I was extremely disappointed in Rep. Katko’s vote for the GOP tax scam. He, along with other New York Republicans, voted against the needs of their constituents. This bill is a disaster for Central New York. Our large anchor institutions – Syracuse University, SUNY Upstate – will see their grad student enrollment decline and we will see fewer students from across the nation and globe coming to Syracuse. Homeowners in the city and the suburbs will see their taxes go up as a result of the reduction of the SALT deduction. Cutting the historic preservation tax credit will stymie development in our booming downtown – a reality made more ironic by the fact Rep. Katko brought Paul Ryan to the Hotel Syracuse for a fundraiser, a building the development of which would not have been possible without those credits."
Miner is also challenging Katko to a debate about the tax plan, on Twitter:
.@RepJohnKatko After declining to debate the effects of your party's devastating healthcare bill, will you join me to discuss this tax bill with our constituents? Tuesday, December 5. 9 am.— Stephanie Miner (@MayorMinerSYR) November 29, 2017
Katko wasted no time firing back:
"If Stephanie Miner wants to run against me because I want to cut taxes for the vast majority of my constituents, then her priorities are even more out of place than I suspected. I welcome the opportunity to discuss the economic malaise and stunning rate of local poverty she's leaving behind in the City of Syracuse."
Miner is term limited out of Syracuse City Hall. She had previously announced that she's not running for Congress, after months of speculation she was considering it.
Two Democrats have already announced congressional campaigns against Katko: Anne Messenger and Dana Balter.
