New state-of-the-art community library in DeWitt opens

DEWITT (WSYR-TV) - DeWitt's new state-of-the-art library held its grand opening on Saturday as hundreds of visitors passed through for the first time.

The project has been discussed and planned for nearly 20 years. DeWitt's old library was located on the first floor of Shoppingtown Mall and had never been intended to be a permanent location.

Taxpayers approved the $8 million dollar facility on Jamesville Rd. in 2016.

The new library has more of a community center feel with an expanded childrens area along with modern furniture, a cafe, and an outdoor patio.

"We don't know what direction libraries are going 10-15 years from now," Wendy Scott, the library's executive director said. "So we wanted to make sure that this was a space that could be re-engineered and re-configured so that we could accommodate whatever direction libraries take."
