MINETTO (WSYR-TV) - A summer tradition in Oswego County has paused this year as families wonder if the Midway Drive-In will open this season, following the death of owner John Nagelschmidt.
For decades, Nagelschmidt was the force behind the drive-in, located on State Route 48 in Minetto.
His devoted fans rallied to support the business after a storm destroyed the old screen a few years ago.
The former teacher in the Fulton School District was well-known throughout Central New York and his sudden death caught his neighbors and family off guard.
Nagelschmidt's son, also named John, said his father died while working alone with a backhoe.
The circumstances were difficult for his children to come to terms with. They've also needed time to sort out business matters.
The younger Nagelschmidt says his family is determined to protect the drive-in's future.
If all goes as planned, he's hoping to announce an opening date in the next few weeks.
