Price Rite eyes April opening for South Ave. Syracuse store

Company will hold job fair for store openings February 8

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Work is moving along quickly on the highly sought after supermarket for Syracuse’s South Side.

The new Price Rite on South Avenue is targeting an April opening.

The neighborhood has been without a supermarket for so many years community leaders started calling it a “food desert."

Price Rite plans to bring low prices on fresh fruits and vegetables so lacking in this neighborhood.

Price Rite District Manager Corey Confer says, "Being able to bring that freshness to South Ave which is so critical and important for living a healthy lifestyle, we're really excited about that."

Price Rite is nearly doubling the size of the long vacant Loblaw's grocery store, building pride in the community as much as the supermarket itself.

Community leader Walt Dixie tells NewsChannel 9, "We need other companies to come into our community as they all begin to take looks at this area they'll see this area is just as enriched as any other community or neighborhood business in the City of Syracuse."

The Price Rite on South Avenue is about a lot more he says than just groceries like jobs for instance.

About a hundred or more people are going to be needed to run the place once it opens.

Dixie says, "There's a need for work as well as affordable food and healthy food to build back our neighborhoods so we're excited about all this."

Early next month Jubilee Homes and Price Rite will hold a job fair informational session with the ins and outs of successfully applying for upcoming jobs at the South Avenue store.

It will be Wednesday night, February 8 from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Southwest Community Center at 401 South Avenue.
