Red Cross in urgent need of blood donations this winter

Nearly 40,000 fewer donations than needed in November and December

LIVERPOOL (WSYR-TV) - As Michael and Amanda Torello get ready to give blood platelets at the American Red Cross' Liverpool blood donation center, they realize first hand the impact their contribution will have.

"You really realize how much of a difference it actually makes," Amanda Torello said.

Amanda's mother and grandfather both recently received blood or platelet donations during recent hospital visits. Michael's mother, who died in 2016, did as well.

"It's something that I think she definitely would appreciate," Michael said of his mother. "She was a nurse," he added.

The Red Cross is in need of donors like the Torello's now more than ever. In November and December, they fell short of nearly 40,000 donations necessary for the months.

The organization also says more than 100 blood drives have been canceled this winter because of inclement weather.

Michael hopes that will change in 2017 adding that donating requires "minimal effort" and "[while] no one likes needles, the cause overpowers the fear."
