RPD: Man critically injured entering church overnight

24-year-old listed in critical condition

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC-TV) - Rochester Police are investigating an incident that occurred overnight at a church on South Winton Road.

At around 3 a.m. Thursday morning, a 24-year-old man was found laying on the First Unitarian Church's lawn with severe lacerations. One of the front windows of the church is now completely smashed.

Police say the man, who has not been identified, had ran away from home and went through a window to get into the church.

Reverend Joel Miller says nothing was taken or destroyed inside the church.

It is unclear why the man went to the church in the first place, but Miller says the smashed window was not the only cause of the man's injuries.

"He was seriously injured when he smashed the window," Miller said. "Before he came in, he was already seriously injured. So we are concerned for his well-being."

The man is in critical condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.

Police say the investigation is ongoing. The Winton Road Nursery School will remain closed Thursday due to the incident.

WROC-TV will provide more information as it becomes available.
