South Side families thrilled for new Price Rite in Syracuse

Store opening this Sunday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - It's been just under a year since local leaders first broke ground on what has become a brand new Price Rite grocery store in the City of Syracuse.

Families on the South Side are eagerly awaiting the store's official grand opening this weekend.

While the store has been in the works for 10 years, it's filling a gap that's been missing for so much longer.

"This is considered a food desert and we've probably not had a super market in this neighborhood for probably 30 to 40 plus years," said Walt Dixie, Executive Director of Jubilee Homes of Syracuse.

Currently, many families have to walk even to buy a gallon of milk, so they say to have a grocery store right around the corner will be a welcome change.

"You see them walking with the strollers with groceries there or kids walking with bags in the winter time. It's hard," said Tanya Odom, who lives nearby.

Many of those walking will be some of the store's more than 100 new employees.

"You have Rich St., you have Lincoln, Huron St., so every neighborhood there's someone working in this store and that's credibility to the store itself," said Dixie.

As well as bring some much-needed money to the neighborhood.

"This is a good investment, we hope this becomes a segue of more investment into our community that we can pull in government or private dollars, so we're really excited about this opportunity," said Dixie.

The new Price Rite opens officially at 8 a.m. on Sunday. The store is located on South Avenue.
