State offering online registration for gun owners to re-register

Safe Act re-registration deadline coming up

Syracuse, NY (WSYR-TV) - For the first time gun owners in New York state will have to re-register their handguns as part of the New York Safe Act. It requires owners to register every 5 years so the first deadline is coming up.

Individuals who first registered in 2013 have less than a year to re-register, but there's been a lot of confusion among gun owners as to how, when, and where they have to re-register their permits.

"Until it is in total black and white, you're just going to have to go by what you read on the Internet," said Tim Nelson, owner of Intimidator Sports.

At Intimidator Sports, they're asked each day about gun re-registration.

"If they could even send us a packet of info that we could read, you know, and we could tell the customers, here's the information, you can look over what they sent us, and interpret it as you wish," said Nelson.

To help streamline the process, the state has unveiled a new way to re-register online.

Individuals simply need to head to the SAFE Act website, click on the pistol permit recertification button, and fill out basic personal information to re-register.

"I hope we can get to a point that we can say 'this what you're going to have to do when you have to do it, or this what's going to happen if you don't.'" said Nelson.

If you registered your handgun back in 2013, you have until January 31, 2018 to re-register.
