Students at SUNY Oswego participating in storm chasing

OSWEGO, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Some students at SUNY Oswego are studying the severe weather and tornados you hear about in the Midwest— by chasing them.

A group of aspiring meteorologists at Oswego State with will be taking part in storm chasing as well over the next two weeks.

This is the 10th year that Oswego has offered the storm chasing program.

"For the purpose of forecasting and observing real storms, it's especially nice for SUNY Oswego students because they don't really get to see that kind of weather like they do in Illinois and points West,” said meteorology professor Dr. Scott Steiger.

Dr. Steiger and his team always learn a lot about thunderstorm development when chasing. The chasing team also informs the nearest National Weather Service & media outlets of the severe weather that is taking place in order to get the potentially life saving information relayed to the public.
