SU Beats UNC-Greensboro 90-77 in NIT first round

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Between the disappointment from Selection Sunday to the postponement caused by this week's severe snow storm, there were plenty of reasons to wonder if the Orange would be ready to play in its NIT opener against UNC-Greensboro.

Andrew White III stepped forward though and provided the answer to those questions.

White dazzled the Carrier Dome crowd yet again with a 34-point effort in leading Syracuse to a 90-77 victory over the Southern Conference's regular season champs.

The fifth-year transfer made seven of his nine attempts from three-point range and in the process, he broke Gerry McNamara's all-time school record for most made three-pointers in a season.

McNamara made 107 as a junior in 2004-05.  White now stands at 109 with at least one more game to play.

Tyus Battle chipped in with 20 points for the Orange.  Tyler Lydon and Taurean Thompson rounded out the group of SU players in double figures.  Lydon scored 13 points, Thompson added 12.

According to the NCAA record books, this is career win #903 for Jim Boeheim which puts him back into sole possession of second place on the all-time wins list for D-I men's coaches.

Next up for the Orange will be Mississippi at home in the second round of the NIT.  the Rebels were 91-83 winners Tuesday night on the road at Monmouth.

Syracuse University men's basketball will host Mississippi on Saturday, March 18 at 11 a.m. in the Carrier Dome in the second round of the 2017 NIT.

Tickets, which start at $15, will be on sale at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
