Syracuse's season ends with 85-80 loss to Ole Miss in NIT

Orange finishes 2016-17 season with 19-15 mark

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - The Syracuse University men's basketball season has come to an end after an 85-80 loss to Mississippi in the second round of the NIT at the Carrier Dome on Saturday.

As has been the case so often this year, it was defense -- or lack thereof -- that cost the Orange.

The Rebels outrebounded SU 38-36, and connected on 15-of-32 three-pointers (47%).

Terence Davis led the charge, scoring a career-best 30 points on 11-of-14 shooting, including a 6-for-7 performance from long range.

Davis entered the game shooting just 29% from three this season.

Andrew White III and Taurean Thompson led SU with 18 points each, while Tyus Battle chipped in 17 points. -- all coming after halftime.

Tyler Lydon posted his ninth double-double of the year, finishing with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

SU led at halftime 38-36,  but Mississippi went on a 20-6 run over the end the first half and start of the second.

After the game, Syracuse head coach Jim Boeheim called the contest, “a microcosm of our season,” in reference to SU's continuing defensive struggles.

The Orange finish the season at 19-15, after reaching the NCAA Final Four last season.

Saturday's game was final game for seniors Tyler Roberson, DaJuan Coleman, Andrew White III and John Gillon.

Sophomore Tyler Lydon declined comment regarding his future.

He's considered a likely first round pick, should he elect to declare for the NBA Draft.
