SU women's basketball wins NCAA opener, faces UConn Monday

Freshman Gabby Cooper sink 8 three's in Orange rout

STORRS, CT (WSYR-TV) - The Syracuse University women's basketball team won it's first round game in the NCAA tournament against Iowa State on Saturday, 85-65.

Freshman Gabby Cooper made five three-pointers in the first six minutes of the game, en route to a 24-point outing.

She tied the program record with 8 made-three's, finishing 8-for-15 from beyond the arc.

Fifth-year senior Brittney Sykes led all scorers with 28 points -- 21 coming in just the first half.

Cooper and Sykes combined to score 26 of SU's 33 first quarter points, as Syracuse raced out to a 33-8 lead after one quarter of play.

The Orange's pressure defense forced 18 turnovers against the Cyclones -- 12 in the first 20 minutes of play.

ISU came into the game 12th in nation in fewest turnovers committed, averaging just about 12 per game.

ACC Player of the Year Alexis Peterson added in 25 points for Syracuse, whoe can now look forward to a showdown on Monday with top-ranked UConn. 

It'll be a rematch of last year's national title game which Connecticut won 82-51.

The Huskies rolled past Albany in the first game of the day at Gampel Pavilion 116-55.

UConn has now won 108 consecutive games.

Tip-off between the Orange and Huskies is set for 6:30pm on Monday. The game will televised on ESPN2.
