Sullivan Town Supervisor: New casino 'significant' for hamlet of Bridgeport

BRIDGEPORT (WSYR-TV) - When the Oneida Nation breaks ground on its new Point Place casino next month, Sullivan town supervisor John Becker thinks it will give the hamlet of Bridgeport a much needed boost.

"Bridgeport is an area that thrived in the 50's and 60's and early 70's," Becker said. "But as the close of the decade came. And the new millennium started, it's gone downhill."

Becker called the $40 to $50 million private investment for the hamlet "significant".

The casino is expected to be built near Rt. 31 and Bridgeport/Kirkville Rd. in Madison County. It's only a few hundred feet from Onondaga County and the town of Cicero.

"Most folks work in Onondaga County from our area," Becker said. "They shop in Onondaga County. So, hopefully we'll get some investment to stake that area for folks who come in here. Maybe they'll be able to work and shop here."

He acknowledges some of the concerns with the project, most having to do with traffic, but added the positives, including hundreds of new jobs, will likely outweigh any negative side effects.

"You don't get that everyday," Becker said. "I think we have to embrace the change and positivity it can bring."
