Syracuse Chiefs temporarily change to 'Salt Potatoes'

First 1,000 fans Saturday night get replica "Salt Potatoes" jersey

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - If you haven't heard yet there's a new professional baseball team in town and they're playing their one and only game this season on Saturday night.

"What If Night" at NBT Bank Stadium will allow the Syracuse Chiefs and their fans to see what life would be like as the Syracuse Salt Potatoes.

Salt Potatoes General Manager Jason Smorol tells NewsChannel 9 "It's created a buzz. It's fun, the fans are enjoying it, they're enjoying the fact they can argue whether or not he should be holding a fork or a baseball bat, what's his name, is that butter on his head."

He says the players themselves are getting behind the new nickname and logo too.

"They think it's great, they're embracing it and they think its neat to be a salt potato for a day."  Smorol says.

It was back in March when the Chiefs cooked up their plan for "What If Night" and after hundreds of suggestions based on what Central New York means to them a local staple like Salt Potatoes won out.

Smorol says the demand has been high for merchandise featuring the Salt Potatoes name and logo.

"We've shipped to over 40 states, we've shipped to 3 different countries.  It's hard to get the stuff in and keep it in because as soon as we get it we have to fill the back orders. As they order salt potatoes stuff they're adding on a Chiefs hat so we're actually selling even more Chiefs material outside of the community than we normally do."  He says.

And for the full experience the team is changing Chiefsville to Tatertown for Saturday night.

Now as fun and neat looking as the new nickname and logo are Smorol says this is a one night only event and there are no plans to change from the Chiefs.

If you're planning on going Smorol says they're expecting a big crowd so get there early.  Gates open at 5:30 p.m. with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch.

NewChannel 9's Storm Team Chief Meterologist Jim Teske and The Morning News Anchor Jennifer Sanders will be throwing out first pitches.

The Super Saturday giveaway tomorrow will be a replica "Salt Potatoes" jersey for the first 1,000 fans and the night will conclude with post-game fireworks.
