Syracuse heart walk raises hundreds of thousands of dollars

3,000 people participate for the American Heart and Stroke Associations

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - Central New Yorkers joined the fight against two of the nation's biggest killers Saturday - heart disease and stroke.

About 3,000 people showing their support at the Syracuse Heart Walk at SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College.

Those impacted by both diseases shared their stories, hoping to promote awareness and urge taking preventative measures.
"Heart disease is the nation's #1 killer and stroke is the  #5 killer, but they are both 80% preventable. So the work that we do here, the work the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association does is so very important," said Kimberly Boynton, this year's heart walk chairwoman.
The group raised more than $550,000 dollars for the American Heart Association and Stroke Associations and will be used to improve programs right here in Central New York.
