Thousands greet newest International Boxing Hall of Fame 2017 Inductees

Canastota, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Sunday was a big day in Canastota as thousands of boxing fans took to the streets to welcome the sports legends from across the globe.

It’s a tradition that brings fans to Canastota year after year. "My father and I have been coming here for 21 years and we've met some of the best friends we'll ever have in our entire lives from all over the country, and really from all over the world,” says boxing super fan Pete Hary.

Thousands just like Pete line the streets to welcome the boxers in to their ring- the small town that hosts big names in boxing.

"To see all these boxers come here, even if you're not a boxing fan, it's always an excellent thing to see all these boxers and see all the activity that's going on here,” adds Canastota resident Louise Mosack.

This years honoree is four time world heavyweight champion Evander “The Real Deal” Holyfield, who credits his family for making it to this stage.

“"I'm sitting here so thankful that this Hall of Fame thing is all about the help that I got from someone else,” Holyfield says. “I want to thank all the people here that made the decision to elect me, to put me in, thank you very much."

But his fans think he’s the one that deserves the thanks for the years he gave them in the ring.

"It's a privilege to be here for him. He gave us so many great fights that we've all loved and seen,” explains Hary. “To be here among one of our heroes is just amazing." That same sentiment was shared among the Canastota crowd.

Holyfield topped the list of eight new inductees this year. The list includes “The Baby Faced Assassin” Marco Antonio Barrera, veteran judge Jerry Roth, and broadcaster Barry Tompkins.
