Three men save Schroeppel man trapped in Oswego River

SCHROEPPEL (WSYR-TV) - Three men pulled a 66-year-old man to safety Friday evening after he was trapped in the Oswego River off County Route 57 in the Town of Schroeppel.

Police say the man had driven across his backyard in his H3 Hummer to get a view of the shoreline.  When he attempted to return back to his residence, he accidently backed the truck into the river.

The man tried to free the truck, and somehow became pinned under the vehicle. He told police he was trapped in the water for approximately 45 minutes and was bitten by snakes multiple times.

Three men leaving work at the neighboring Sharon Chevrolet heard the man yelling for help. They trekked about 100 feet through the woods, in the rain, to find him and then rescue him.

Police tell NewsChannel 9 say the rain, the setting sun, the man's age and health history, and how far he was from any other residence all added to the dangerous situation.

Troopers say, considering all the conditions, the man would have died had these men not found him.

The man was brought to Crouse Hospital for evaluation.
