Troopers say driver in deadly Herkimer County crash was drunk

24-year-old Ammar Barakat is charged with DWI and vehicular manslaughter

TOWN OF SCHUYLER (WSYR-TV) - Vehicular manslaughter, DWI, and speeding are among the charges against a driver who crashed his vehicle on Saturday. His passenger died at the scene.

Troopers were called to State Route 5 in the Herkimer County Town of Schuyler to investigate.

They believe 24-year-old Ammar Barakat of Marcy was drunk when he lost control of his car and hit a snow embankment, then a pole, before the car flipped onto its roof.

Barakat was treated for cuts on his head. His passenger, 29-year-old Raymond Pinney of Herkimer did not survive.

Bail was set at $10,000 cash or $30,000 bond. Barakat is back in court on March 27 at 6 p.m.
