UPDATE: I-81 Northbound in Cortland County re-opens after deadly crash

CORTLANDVILLE, NY (WSYR-TV) -  I-81 northbound between exits 11 and 12 has re-opened after being shut down for almost ten hours Sunday morning due to a fatal car accident.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident at 2:36 Sunday morning. The accident occurred in the northbound lane just south of the Homer Exit 12 off ramp in Cortlandville.

The Sheriff’s Office says that a 2008 Kia Optima with 4 occupants was traveling northbound on 81 when the driver lost control of the vehicle, striking the guide rail on the right side and the left side before coming to a stop in the middle of the highway.

According to officials, the four occupants of the Kia got out of the car when a second vehicle, a 2015 Ford Mustang then hit the Kia in the roadway.

Deputies say that one of the occupants of the Kia was struck and killed while outside the vehicle.

The Sheriff's Office says that the three other occupants, as well as the driver of the Mustang, were evaluated by medical personnel at the scene but were not taken to the hospital.

Names are not being released at this time.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.

New York State Police, the Village of Homer Police, the Cortland City Police, the Homer Fire Department and TLC ambulance also assisted at the scene of the accident.
