UPDATE: Fire at the Erie County Fair is under investigation

6 people treated for smoke inhalation

HAMBURG, N.Y. (WIVB-TV) - Fire crews are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out at Weidner’s Chicken and Steak food stand at the Erie County Fair Saturday night.

Officials told News 4 the fire started around 8 pm and the stand was fully engulfed.

Security immediately moved people out of the Kiddieland area and secured the site.

Fire crews say it took about 20 minutes to put the fire out. They had to shut off all the gas and secure the nearby propane tanks.

Erie County Fair officials said six people were treated for smoke inhalation, one of which were transported to the hospital. Two firefighters were evaluated at the scene and released. No animals were injured.

Fire officials say getting people out of the way was their biggest challenge, but they’re crediting the quick action of the security guards for keeping everyone safe.

“Crowd control and the police and the security, people here worked perfectly, they opened up lanes for the fire apparatus to get to where we had to get to, everything went according to plan, we have a major plan here that just covers events here and it worked, it really worked,” said a fire chief on scene.

The family who owns Weidner’s Chicken stand said they’ve been a part of the Erie County Fair for more than 60 years. Most of their equipment was damaged in the fire.

“It’s tough to see, aside from losing equipment and things like that, it’s a family heirloom, we put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into that place, it’s not one of these pop-up shops that you just pull in and you’re here and ready to go so it’s tough to see,” said Ryan Gerber, family member of Weidner’s.

The Erie County Fair will reopen Sunday for its last day.
