BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB/WSYR) - Officers from agencies across the nation are arriving in Buffalo as they’re showing their support for Officer Craig Lehner and all the members of the Buffalo Police department.
“It’s what we do,” Niagara County Sheriff Jim Voutour told WIVB-TV. "We take care of each other.”
Upwards of ten thousand law enforcement agency members are expected to attend Officer Craig Lehner’s funeral service and the wake.
During Wednesday’s procession and service, outside agencies, including those from NY State Police, are stepping up and performing duties around the city – duties usually covered by Buffalo Police – so all members of BPD can attend Officer Lehner’s funeral ceremony.
Lehner, a nine-year veteran of the force, was taking part in a routine training exercise with the Buffalo Police Underwater Rescue Team last Friday when he disappeared.
Officer Lehner, 34, joined the police force in 2008. His primary duty is with the K-9 unit; he’s partnered with a German Shepherd named Shield.
His body was recovered on Tuesday.
