West Middle School re-opens as affordable housing unit in Auburn

AUBURN, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) - Nearly 60 people who've been struggling to find affordable housing now have a new place to call home in Auburn.

What used to be West Middle School has transformed into apartments -- six years after the school closed its doors.

The hard floors in the apartment’s community room only needed refinishing because it used to be the gymnasium.

Builders took advantage of historic tax credits and had to follow strict rules of what stayed and what had to go.

33 of the 59 apartments are already filled, and there's now a waiting list to apply for the others.

15 of the apartments also include mental health support services.
