Why did the tropical storm names go from Jose to Maria?

SYRACUSE, N.Y., (WSYR-TV) - Over the past few days, the weather has rightfully been focused on Hurricane Jose and Hurricane Maria.  People have written in wondering what happened to the storm names which begin with K and L?

There is no conspiracy.  They formed.  They were overshadowed by Harvey, Irma and Jose.

As the world was focused on Harvey and Irma, Katia formed in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.  It became a Category 1 hurricane with winds of around 76 miles per hour.  The storm slammed into Mexico and weakened.  Interestingly, the remnant energy emerged in the Pacific Ocean and eventually became Hurricane Otis (they have a different naming list for that ocean)

Shortly after Katia formed, Jose formed.

Around the middle of September, a disturbance emerged off of the west coast of Africa and eventually became known as Lee.  Lee quickly encountered a hostile environment and eventually was torn apart.

Here is the list of storm names, which revolves after 6 years.
