Your Stories: Does the DOT really send cash with surveys?

We contacted the government agency to find out for a NewsChannel 9 viewer!

SYRACUSE (WSYR-TV) - A NewsChannel 9 viewer was suspicious when she got a packet in the mail, labeled from the U.S. Department of Transportation.

What really caught her eye was the two dollars in cash included in the envelope, as an incentive to fill out a survey.

She assumed it's a scam.

But, it turns out the government does send cash sometimes for surveys and the DOT has been studying how people get around with a National Household Travel survey.

When contacted by NewsChannel 9 to verify the survey, the DOT offered a direct link to the site where they are collecting that information. Click here.

However, since scammers have actually sent out fraudulent surveys about other topics in the past - anyone who gets a mailing should do a little research online and double-check the return address and other questions to make sure it is valid.

Our viewer was not asked to cash a check or send back any money or provide bank account information. That would be a red flag.
