9/11 Memorial Services in Central New York

Several events have been planned throughout Central New York to commemorate the attacks on 9/11. Click through to find out when and where they'll be held.
Syracuse’s Annual September 11 Memorial
  • Event: 17 minutes of Silence 9/11 Commemorative Ceremony
  • Date: Tuesday, September 11, 2012
  • Time: 8:30 a.m.
  • Location: Fayette Firefighters Park
More About the Event: As has been the tradition, there will be no speeches or announcements at this ceremony.

17 minutes of silence will be observed representing the length of time between the first passenger jet striking the north tower of the World Trade Center at 8:46 a.m. and the second passenger jet striking the south tower of the World Trade Center at 9:03 a.m.

The public is invited to attend.

Below is the Schedule of the Ceremony:
  • 8:30 a.m.: Police and Fire Honor Guard will post colors. Police and Fire will be in place.
  • 8:46 a.m.: 911 Beep and Police/Fire Lights will turn on. This will begin the 17 minutes of silence.
  • 8:46 a.m.: Candle lighting will begin.
  • 9:03 a.m.: The 911 Beep will sound and Police/Fire Lights will turn off. This will end the 17 minutes of silence.

September 11 Memorial Ceremony at Onondaga Community College

The college will observe 17 minutes of silence at the 9/11 memorial site, located near the Whitney Building traffic circle, beginning at 8:30 a.m.

The public is invited to attend.

Wreath Laying Ceremony at 9/11 Memorial in Auburn
  • Event: Patriot Day: Annual observance of the September 11 Attacks
  • Date: September 11, 2012
  • Time: 8:35 a.m.
  • Location: South Lawn of Memorial City Hall, 24 South Street, Auburn, NY.
This event is open to the public.

SU Hendricks Chapel Day of Blessing

Syracuse University’s Hendricks Chapel will hold a day of Blessing, Reflection and Prayers on Tuesday, Sept. 11, to mark the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States.

9/11 Memorial at Sheridan Park

Though not part of the Syracuse’s overall 9/11 agenda this year, a small ceremony and wreath laying will still take place at the 9/11 memorial at Sheridan Park in Eastwood.

The ceremony will be held at the Sheridan Park monument and will begin at 10 a.m., following the city’s 9/11 Memorial at Firefighters Park which begins at 8:30 a.m.
