"A League of Their Own" ladies in Syracuse

SYRACUSE, NY (WSYR-TV) - For the first time in more than three decades, the women who inspired the Hollywood film, "A League of Their Own," competed out on the baseball field at Alliance Bank Stadium on Saturday.

"We can still hit but our running isn't the best,” said former All-American Girls Professional Baseball League player Katie Horstman.

"I think the girls like it and we're gonna see what can happen. We have some pretty good ball players when you put them together,” said Maybelle Blair, who pitched for the Peoria Redwings in 1948.

The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League formed 70 years ago.

Hortsman’s journey with the League back in the 1950’s became the inspiration behind the 1992 comedy “A League of Their Own” starring big names like Tom Hanks and Madonna.

Megan Cavanagh, an actress in the movie, was also at Alliance Bank Stadium for the reunion.

The women took pictures and signed autographs with fans.

Organizers said this is likely the last time the ladies will all be together on a baseball diamond again.

A new DVD release of "A League of Their Own" is scheduled for October.

There is also a musical written about the league that producers hope to open on Broadway. It is called "Peaches the Musical."
