Syracuse (WSYR-TV) – More than 22,000 students will receive refunds after being overcharged by a health insurance company, according to the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

Attorney General Eric Schneiderman says that Markel Insurance Company agreed to refund $2.75 million to students across New York State as part of a settlement agreement.

The lawsuit covered students at 34 colleges across New York – including more than 4,700 in Central New York.

Thousands of the students who were overcharged attend schools in New York's SUNY system.

The refunds will average about $107 per student.

The company also agreed to pay a penalty of nearly $1 million – which is split between the Attorney General’s office and the Department of Financial Services.
