Benefit planned for slain college student

New Hartford (WSYR-TV) -- Family and friends said their final goodbyes to Alexandra Kogut in October, but some community members are working to keep her memory alive.

Some of Kogut’s former classmates in New Hartford are hosting a “Dance the Night Away” event on Saturday, January 12. Community members can spend the night at Daniele’s Banquet Specialists in New Hartford listening to three DJ performances, while also experiencing a light show.

Coordinators say it’s a night to have fun, while remembering Alex.

"We just wanted to kind of get something together that would involve the entire community, as well as show the positives rather than negatives, gather everyone, all different age groups,” said Event Coordinator Ryan Schiavo.

Tickets are $15. They can be purchased at the door. Attendees must be 18 yeas of age or older. All proceeds will be donated to the Alexandra Kogut Memorial Fund at New Hartford High School.

Kogut, a freshman at SUNY Brockport, was murdered in her dorm room back in September. Her boyfriend, 21-year-old Clayton Whittemore, confessed to the murder. He remains behind bars.
